Sleep more and weight loss is more fat, less muscle.

How much sleep you get can affect whether your weight loss is fat or muscle.

A small study was done recently that found if you are trying to lose weight, more sleep equals more fat loss.

The study was done in a sleep lab under controlled conditions.  For a two week period subjects slept 8.5 hours/night.  The same people were then allowed to sleep just 5.5 hours/night for a second two week period.

Under both situations they ate the exact same amount of calories.

Interestingly, they lost the same amount weight whether they slept 5.5 or 8.5 hours.  The key difference was what they were losing.

When they slept 8.5 hours/night the weight loss was mostly fat, when they slept 5.5 hours/night the weight loss was mostly muscle.
