Is fasting a good way to lose weight?

Hi All,

Many people are intrigued about fasting as a way to lose weight.  Is it a good way to lose weight?

Let’s look at it from a Biblical perspective and a scientific one too.

Science has proven starving yourself is not an effective way to lose weight.  Not only do you deprive your body of essential nutrients, you shut down your metabolism and if that isn’t enough,  you’ll lose more muscle than fat.

Fasting from a Biblical perspective is not intended as a way to lose weight but as a way to get closer to God.  Fasting turns your focus to God and can help you develop an awareness of his presence throughout your day.  Developing this awareness is critical to learning to limit the power of temptation.

While fasting is not necessary to developing an awareness of God, for some it may be helpful.

Her binging ways returned when she stopped doing this.

Hi All,

I received an email the other day from someone who was struggling again with binging and was desperate to get it under control.

It turned out that she had reverted to trying to go it alone without God’s help and surprise surprise, the Tempter was winning again.

Remember, the Tempter is not looking for a huge opening, all he needs is a small crack.  When we decide to fight temptation on our own we are giving him an opening that he will take advantage of.  We shouldn’t be suprised if we start losing more of our meal/snack battles when this happens.

She had her binging under control when she practiced present moment awareness of the presence of God.  When she decided she didn’t need to do this anymore, her binging ways returned.

She learned a valuable lesson that I hope all can learn from.

Hi All,

Came across an article today that should give anyone who is already obese or on their way more incentive to lose the weight.

The excess fat can get in the way of your doctor diagnosing health problems such as thyroid, heart and finding tumors.

The article states even with all the high tech tools, doctors find much of their life saving information from touching the body.

Is this missing from your weight loss support group?

Research studies have shown 94% – 98% of people fail at weight loss. 

Millions of these people belong to weight loss support groups… now I’m not knocking support groups, I think they are great and serve a useful purpose. 

So why don’t they work? 

Your weight loss support group can’t be with you 24/7. 

They aren’t with you when you are standing alone in your kitchen and temptation strikes.  

They aren’t with you when you are tempted to over eat a meal. 

They aren’t with you when you are looking at a restaurant menu.  

They aren’t with you when you are tempted by the candy at a checkout counter. 

They aren’t with you when someone brings goodies to work. 

See, the Tempter doesn’t play fair, he wants to attack you when you are weak.

He waits for when you are alone or distracted to tempt you. 

He knows if he does battle with you then, he can beat you and sabotage your weight loss. 

The only way to defeat him is to allow God to be part of your support group 24/7.  You have to develop an awareness of God’s presence throughout your day. 

If you don’t develop an understanding of temptation, how it affects you and take steps to limit its power, guess what will happen?

You’ll either give up on weight loss, start looking for a new diet, pill, or support group and the cycle will begin again.

The choice is yours.

Soldiers going to extremes to lose weight and meet standards

Hi Y’all,

“Soldiers are dangerously starving themselves, gobbling diet pills and laxatives — even going under the knife in costly liposuction surgery — all to meet the Army’s weight standards and avoid losing their careers.”

Religion and Happiness Survey

Hi folks,

I read an interesting article about a survey regarding religion and happiness.

The results were different than most surveys on the topic.  It found that friends made at church are what create the happiness, not spirituality and church rituals.

It is interesting to note the study also found “those who reported that they “feel God’s love” seemed to have more life satisfaction than those who did not.”  Could it be that they are more aware of God’s presence in their everyday life?

I know this to be true in my life and for many of the people God has allowed me to help resist the temptation to binge  and overeat.

Goal: Help 1 Million People Lose Weight While Eating Holiday Foods

Hi folks,

Most people spent last week gorging over Thanksgiving and began their annual holiday weight gain.

The National Institutes for Health did research that found for most people holiday weight gain is permanent..yikes!  They say people need to find a way to stop this weight gain to prevent obesity and its problems.

I am on a mission to help one million people lose five pounds by Jan. 1 while still enjoying their favorite holiday foods.

Can you imagine how this will turn their ideas about weight loss upside down?

If people can enjoy their favorite foods and lose weight during the holiday season their whole mind set toward weight loss will change.  Instead of looking for “a new diet or magic pill” to start the New Year, they’ll know the answer lies with allowing God to work deeply and gently within.

I can’t do this alone, I need your help.

Please help your friends and relatives understand temptation, how it affects them, and how by focusing on God and using their abilities, they can limit the power temptation has over them.

If one million people can turn the idea of holiday weight gain on its head, imagine the example they’ll be able to set for others as we head into the new year!

Man loses 240 pounds the old fashioned way

Hi Folks,

I believe you can always learn something when you read stories about people who have had success losing weight and how they did it.

I read a story the other day about a guy who lost 240 pounds.  His weight loss was not with any gimmick diets, just plain old eating better and eating less.

While I don’t agree with everything in the article (he worked out 1 – 2 hours/day) it can be inspiring for those with a lot of weight to lose.

The article also states that “this is the way to long lasting success.”  While new eating habits are critical to losing weight, they don’t guarantee lasting success.

I’ve heard of and seen too many stories of people similar to him that have taken off a lot of weight and revert to their old habits as soon as stress comes into their lives.  When people are stressed temptation rears its ugly head.

As I’ve said over and over, if you don’t understand what is going on when you are tempted, you have no chance of limiting the power of temptation.

When you understand temptation, how it affects you and learn how to limit its power you then have a chance at lasting weight loss.

Man loses 27 pounds in 10 weeks on junk food diet.

I read an article today that was fascinating.  Mark  Haub, a professor of  Human Nutrition at Kansas State University went on a junk food diet for 10 weeks and lost 27 pounds.  He was trying to see if the type of food or amount (calories) was more critical in weight loss.

His results showed the critical key is calories consumed.

What is even more interesting is his cholesterol improved, bad went down and good went up.

While I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, it shows that when you are able to resist the temptation to over eat, you can lose weight; no matter what you are eating.
