Man loses 27 pounds in 10 weeks on junk food diet.

I read an article today that was fascinating.  Mark  Haub, a professor of  Human Nutrition at Kansas State University went on a junk food diet for 10 weeks and lost 27 pounds.  He was trying to see if the type of food or amount (calories) was more critical in weight loss.

His results showed the critical key is calories consumed.

What is even more interesting is his cholesterol improved, bad went down and good went up.

While I wouldn’t recommend this to anyone, it shows that when you are able to resist the temptation to over eat, you can lose weight; no matter what you are eating.

Can’t Stop Binging and Over Eating Halloween Candy Before Halloween?

So you thought it was a great idea to stock up on candy well before Oct. 31 because you had a coupon, or the selection was better.

That’s what I used to tell myself.  I had good intentions, I was not thinking about eating the candy myself, it just happened!  Then back to the store I went because I needed to restock for handing out to the neighbor kids.  Then I would get into that candy too.

Does this sound familiar?  Does this happen to you year after year and each year you tell yourself this year will be different but like the movie Ground Hog Day you keep doing it over and over?

So what is going on here?  Why can’t you stop?

It all boils down to temptation.

There is an old saying that starts out “Seek first to understand..”  If you don’t understand temptation, how it affects you and learn/practice specific steps to resist temptation how can you expect to stop eating all that candy?

When you spend a few minutes each day and learn to master the art of resisting temptation everything can change.  Your budget for candy will go down (so will your weight) and the neighbor kids will actually get the candy you bought for them!

Sleep more and weight loss is more fat, less muscle.

How much sleep you get can affect whether your weight loss is fat or muscle.

A small study was done recently that found if you are trying to lose weight, more sleep equals more fat loss.

The study was done in a sleep lab under controlled conditions.  For a two week period subjects slept 8.5 hours/night.  The same people were then allowed to sleep just 5.5 hours/night for a second two week period.

Under both situations they ate the exact same amount of calories.

Interestingly, they lost the same amount weight whether they slept 5.5 or 8.5 hours.  The key difference was what they were losing.

When they slept 8.5 hours/night the weight loss was mostly fat, when they slept 5.5 hours/night the weight loss was mostly muscle.

Study finds parents treat obese children less favorably than slender ones.

Hi Folks,

I read an interesting article about a study that found obese children are not treated as well as their more slender siblings by their parents.  Sounds pretty controversial but it is food for thought.  I don’t believe any parent would do so consciously, however I wouldn’t be shocked if it does happen.

Maybe this article will get some parents to examine how they treat their children and something good will come of it.

What if you could resist temptation all day long?

I was sad to see in the news today a story about another pro athlete who could not resist the temptation to abuse drugs.  He had been suspended 4 games last year for drug use.  When he returned he said he was a new man and had learned from his mistakes.

For whatever reason he gave into the temptation to abuse drugs again.  He has been suspended for at least the rest of the season (14 games) and maybe more.

He let down his teammates, coaches, fans, family and himself.  There is even a chance he may have ruined his career long term.

It doesn’t matter if it is drugs, smoking, over eating, drinking too much, staying up too late, not getting work/homework done etc., if one doesn’t learn how to limit the power of temptation in their life they are going to make the same mistakes over and over.

But life doesn’t have to be that way.

I like to give people a little exercise that really opens their eyes.

I tell them to make a list at the end of a day of all the times they gave into temptation.

I then ask them three simple questions:

1) How different would their day have turned out had they been able to resist temptation in each situation?

2) How would they feel?

3) What would their life be like if they could do this every day?

When one gains an understanding of temptation, how it affects them and starts to take action to limit its power everything can change.  What a way to live!

Poll shows many overweight people believe they are thinner than they really are.

I read an interesting article the other day.  A Harris poll was done where people were asked for their height and weight and then asked which category they believed they were in;  normal size, overweight, obese or morbidly obese.

The results included:

1)  30% of people who were overweight believing they were of normal size.

2)  70% of people who were obese believed they were simply overweight.

3)   39% of those who were morbidly obese thought they were simply overweight.

The results seem to show being overweight is becoming the new norm or we have a lot of people living in denial.

The article goes on to state findings such as these may explain why overweight and obesity rates continue to climb.

Most who can’t lose weight and keep it off regularly give in to the temptation to eat “just a little bit more.”

I was reading an interesting article about one of my favorite baseball teams.  One of their starting pitchers (who was suppose to be their #1 starter) was in denial of how bad he was pitching.  He said he wasn’t pitching that badly, just a making a few mistakes here or there.

The manager sat down with him and showed him the statistics to date on his season.  He was last in one category, second to last in another and not good in any statistics they measure for major league pitchers.  Here he was having a lousy year and he saw it as just making a few mistakes.  The problem was those few mistakes were not corrected and he kept making them over and over.

A lot of people who struggle with their weight have the same view point.  They don’t see themselves doing badly, just making a few mistakes here and there when the facts show something different.

I’ve seen numerous studies done about portion control and over eating.  The predominant view seems to be most people actually eat 25% more calories than they think they do.  Why is this?  I believe it is because most over weight people are either in denial or not aware of how temptation is at the root of their weight loss struggles.

Think about it, often when we are either ordering food or being served, we don’t have the thought “I’m going to stuff myself.”  It is usually, “I’ll have the large instead of medium size, one more scoop or piece or maybe just a  little bit bigger piece.”  It is the temptation to eat just a little bit more on a regular basis that is behind the problem.

Once we understand this simple fact and take steps to limit the power temptation has over us everything can change.

When we learn to resist the temptation to eat that “little bit extra” on a consistent basis we have given ourselves a chance at lasting weight loss.

Young man proves importance of faith and works.

Hi all,

I read an inspiring article this morning about a young man with a strong faith who understands what the Bible means when it says “Faith without works is dead.”

His name is Stephen Bravo-Brown, he is a freshman walk-on receiver with the University of South Florida (USF)  Bulls.

He was a talented football player in high school who was going to attend a smaller school in Pennsylvania and play football.  It didn’t work out there (God had bigger plans).

He still wanted to play college football but as he said, “I didn’t stress about it.  I just prayed about it a lot.” (Faith)

He said he always liked USF growing up so he turned his focus there.  He starting calling assistant coaches and didn’t quit until one of them picked up the phone. (Works)

Once the coaches saw highlight film  he provided they became interested and the rest is history.  In his first USF game he entered the game on just the fourth offensive play (ahead of seven receivers on scholarship) and had a great game.

He said, “This is just where God put me.  I knew this was where I was meant to be once he answered the phone.”

This is a humble young man who when asked about his great game deflected praise to the great job the quarterback and offensive line did that helped him succeed.

Magic weight loss pill with free bonus heart attack or stroke!

Hi all,

In the news was another story about yet another weight loss drug that was causing health problems. A study published in the New England Journal of Medicine found that a drug that is prescribed for weight loss, that’s right.. prescribed, is putting people at increased risk of heart attack and stroke.

This isn’t the first time and I’m sure it won’t be the last where people will be putting their health at greater risk by looking for a magic pill.

When people try to change the outside without changing the inside they have no chance at lasting weight loss..and it’s been proven again, possibly do more harm than good.

To achieve lasting weight loss, as discussed in my TV interview, one must change from the inside out. Part of that change is understanding temptation and how to limit the power temptation has over you.

Enough preaching..I hope you all have a fun and safe labor day weekend!

God bless,

You cannot stop binging and over eating if you keep rowing in circles.

Hi all,

You’ve heard the quote from the Bible, “Faith without works is dead.”  In everyday language that means God expects us to not only ask for help but use the abilities he has given us.  My Dad use to put it another way, “Pray to God but keep rowing for shore.”

The opposite statement is also true, “Works without faith is dead.”

People that cannot stop binging and over eating fall into one of two categories:

1)  Those that pray but keep rowing in circles (no idea how to use their God given abilities).

2)  Those who don’t pray and keep rowing in circles.

And we wonder why 95 – 99% of people don’t achieve lasting weight loss.

To have any chance at lasting weight loss one must understand temptation, how it affects them and learn how to use their God given abilities.  When you combine this with prayer,  your life can change in ways that are unimaginable.

God bless,

Danny
